d directed by Quentin Tarantino. Django (Jamie Foxx) and his wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) are sold at a slave auction. While Broomhilda is sold to an unknown buyer, Django is bought by the Speck brothers (James Remar and James Russo). When Django and a number of slaves are being transported across the country, the Brothers are confronted by Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz); a former German dentist turned bounty hunter who uses his former profession of a dentist as a cover. Schultz frees Django from the Speck brothers and kills them. After escaping, Schultz gives Django the option of helping him hunt down and kill the Brittle Brothers; a ruthless gang of killers whom he needs Django to recognize for him. In return, Schultz will free Django from slavery completely and help find and rescue Broomhilda from the charming but brutal Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), who owns Candyland, a plantation where male slaves are trained to fight for sport and female slaves are forced into prostitution.[7] Django agrees, and the two go after Candie and the Brittle gang. Shultz confesses that his profession of bounty hunting is opportunistic but he also mentions to Django that he “despises slavery”.

After hunting down and killing the Brittle brothers, Schultz takes on Django as his associate in bounty hunting. Django proves himself to be a talented bounty hunter, but he is initially uneasy. After collecting a number of bounties over the course of the winter, Schultz and Django confirm that Calvin Candie is Broomhilda’s current owner. They devise a plan where the two of them pose as potential purchasers of one of Candie’s slave fighters to reach Django’s wife, after scoring an invitation to Candie’s ranch. Dr. Schultz introduces Django as his equal, but this causes hostility at Candieland, where racism is extreme. Shultz and Django are shocked to see Candie execute a slave by making attack dogs tear him apart. They agree to purchase a slave of Candie’s, with Broomhilda purchased as well as a side for Dr. Schultz, as Broomhilda speaks German. However, Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s head house slave, figures out that Schultz and Django are really there for Broomhilda, and he reports this discovery to his master, as he is as racist as his white entourage and he resents the high social status of Django. Armed with this information, Candie demands $12,000 for Broomhilda, or to kill her in front of Django. They agree, but during the paperwork signing, Schultz, enraged by Candie’s behavior, kills Candie before being shot. Django slaughters a large portion of the household before being captured. Stephen engineers for Django to be sent to a coal mine to be worked to death, but along the way, Django convinces the slave drivers that he is a bounty hunter, showing them the handbill from his first kill. After being freed, he kills the slave drivers and rides back to the ranch, slaughtering the remainder of the household, leaving Stephen alive inside the Candyland mansion, and rides off with his wife Broomhilda as the house is dynamited. Before leaving Candyland, Django also takes the certificate of freedom of Broomhilda that Candie had signed as part of the purchase agreement

Critic Review

Django’s slave-turned-bounty hunter tale starts in 1865, somewhere in Texas, where Django Unchained (Jamie Foxx) is being transported amongst a group of slaves. His transport is interrupted by a curious traveler named Dr. Schultz (Christoph Waltz) who is looking Django by name. Schultz needs Django’s help to find three brothers he believes were Django’s former overseers. After Schultz buys Django, he agrees to let him work off his freedom and the two become the most unlikely bounty hunting duo.

When Shultz hears of Django’s plan to find his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) once he’s free, the two agree to continue their bounty hunting exploits through the winter and search for Broomhilda together.

And that’s just the first half of the film.

Most filmmakers would handle subject matter such as slavery with kid gloves. They’d be apprehensive in their storytelling/writing hoping they didn’t offend anyone. Not Tarantino. He takes pride in his in-your-face style directing that makes audiences uncomfortable while keeping their eyes glued to the screen.  It’s a filmmaking style that’s a perfect fit for Django Unchained.

Tarantino trades in the historical/biographical storytelling (see: Lincoln), for a spaghetti western full of shootouts, tons of foul language, extreme violence, rapid use of the N-word, and more blood splatter than a season of True Blood. Django’s story may not be historically accurate, but it’s the first time, in a long time, that a director depicted slavery and hasn’t been afraid to show the ugly side – all the ugly sides.

Django’s story picks up, in the second half of the film, when he’s introduced to Calvin Candie (played devilishly by Leonardo DiCaprio); the slave owner they believe has Broomhilda. Django and Shultz pique the interest of Candie by pretending to be slavers looking to buy a “mandingo” fighter.  Once they reach Candie’s plantation (called Candie Land ) they’re introduced to another colorful character – Candie’s unpleasant old house slave Stephen (Samuel Jackson). Once inside the big house, Django Unchained and Schultz match wits with Candie and Stephen as they attempt to free Broomhilda.

It’s hard to stand out in this all-star cast, but Samuel Jackson does just that. Jamie Foxx will undoubtedly receive some Oscar buzz for his stoic performance as Django Unchained . Christoph Waltz will definitely get praise for his colorful portrayal of Dr. King Schultz. And there’s also no doubt DiCaprio’s racist villain will captivate audiences. None of those performances were as memorable as Samuel L. Jackson’s Stephen.

The brilliance of Jackson’s performance is what he’s able to do with little screen time. He turns what could be a forgettable role, into a clever character with multiple layers and delivers the film’s best performances. Stephen’s bald head, thick cotton eyebrows, hunched walk, bug eyed stare, and constant look of disdain set the mood for just how nasty he is.  Jackson is the film’s biggest scene stealer with Stephen’s reactions during two climatic scenes.

What’s most impressive is how Tarantino and his all-star cast infused humor into a gritty revenge tale that touches on one of the ugly chapters of American history. The hilarious Klan hood scene, everyone’s reaction  to Django Unchained on a horse, Don Johnson’s cameo as Big Daddy, and Schultz one-liners are mixed in to give the film a touch of humor that makes the brutally agonizing scenes easier to swallow.
